you don't actually for 100% know the effects that role permissions will give you until you try it
... and you will often find that you can do LESS than you could before. Some of these new limitations can be justified by a security argument: the previous capability was too broad. For example, prior to 1.7 a teacher could change a student's password, but they can't do it now. Others (like the example in this discussion) are purely technical, and should be fixed eventually.
