sorry, I can not reproduce your problem. I tested it with over 4000 characters on a windows-system with php 5.1.1 and all characters were displayed in excel.
Perhaps your excel-version is incompatible. I tested Excel 97/2000/2003. What version do you use? Have you tried to open the xls-File in OpenOffice?
