Ah right, I see now. Well, I think branch tables give you what you are looking for - navigation buttons. You can drop in a branch table anywhere in a lesson and it can have one, two, three... buttons. The buttons can jump to any page within the course. I do agree that those jumps are "pre-determined".
I like your point about a previous page button/link. I think there may well be a need for that.
