Files Won't Display once uploaded.

I recently installed the 1.8 version of Moodle to a hosted server.   I am able to link a file (.doc, .xls, pdf, etc.) with success, but when I try to open the file, it states that the page cannot be found.  I tried enabling ActiveX, but I still can't open the document.  Please help!
