Learning standards: an online forum on e-learning standards

Hi, fellow Moodlers,

The question of what SCORM & Co are and what they can do for us (or to us?) pops up here from time to time.

If anyone here is desperate enough wink and prepared to pay to take part in an online forum entitled A Practical Look at e-Learning Standards & Learning Objects, I've just found this:

http://www.elearningguild.com/pbuild/linkbuilder.cfm?selection=doc.454

The cost of the forum is 245USD more than the price of the campus edition of Moodle with a 1-year licence for 1000 student accounts.wink

Cheers,
Przemek

When I saw the first and the last of the 4 speakers I suppose you better save the money. Macromedia as company supports the e-Learning standards rather halfhearted. If you read the according white papers from their website (available free of charge) related to this topic, most of them dillute the terms. Per instance one papers claims, an asset in the internal "library" of a single flash film can be seen as a "Learning Object". From an e-learning standards view (IEEE, IMS, SCORM etc.) this is complete nonsens. In MM described "best practrice"scenarios you need from two to nearly all MM products like cold fusion, dreamweaver etc. to realize them. This marketing driven very special view is confusing especially to e-Learning standards novizes. Ever asked why MM is not contributing Members of IMS? (Independent from this: some of MM products are great tools and can be used very well to produce standard conforming content and functionalty, but should be used not the way MM talks!).

There are anough sources free of charge. Google about "SCORM" and read the pros and cons. Read the introductions to SCORM available at ADL. Ask questions in their forum. Read the "Best Practice Guidelines" available for each IMS specification like "Content Packaging", "Learning Design" etc. at the IMS website.

ADL has a new portal for Developers and Instructional Designers that you may be interested in. The articles and associated forums deal specifically with implementing SCORM Version 1.2 and SCORM 2004.

Feel free to peruse, comment and contribute your own how-to's and sample content -- or just ask questions. Just about anyone from the ADL tech team would be happy to help with your questions (though we get a lot).

The site is here.
