Desktop editor for Moodle quizzes (announcement)

Hope it's OK to announce this here Күлкі

Just want to let people know that Qedoc has now implemented support for both import and export of Moodle quizzes (using Moodle XML format). That has quite a number of implications for interoperability.

Possibly the main implication, and one I'll be using myself, is to use Qedoc as a more efficient editor for Moodle quizzes and then export (and re-export) results to Moodle whenever occasion arises.

The Qedoc software is free to anyone who publishes their quizzes under a Creative Commons licence.

I've put together a page just for Moodlers who want to know what this is about - http://www.qedoc.org/wiki/index.php?title=Using_the_Qedoc_Quiz_Maker_as_a_quiz_editor_for_Moodle

(or if that URL's too long to work, go to http://www.qedoc.org and type "Moodle" into the searchbox.

Anyone who's like to discuss this with me or ask questions can reply to this posting or use the discussion page for the above article.

Best regards,

James McCormack

I briefly checked this out. It seems pretty complicated. Are ALL questions compatible with Moodle? Also, is there any integration with moodle where the Qedoc player could be a filter or module where the students could have access from within moodle. The finished product looks very slick.

Hi Chris,

Moodle XML supports about 5 main question types (a few more if you include things like essays and descriptions). Qedoc does about 70+. So unfortunately not everything Qedoc does can go into Moodle (yet). That doesn't mean to say I might not cook up something with someone at Moodle... When you have a cost-free editor like Qedoc that creates that many kinds of question, it should become tempting to Moodlers to adapt Moodle to cope with more question types. Possibly the difficulty with adding more question types to Moodles quiz module is that it's hellishly difficult to programme good question editors using just browser controls - Qedoc might help overcome that bottleneck in the system.

When you make a question in Qedoc, you can check a box to filter the Moodle-compatible question types in the choice display.

Yes - love to go in this direction. Takes time and planning, though. But keep your eyes on things Күлкі

Cheers,

JM

Hi James,

Just interested.... are you involved in the Qedoc business or simply an enthusiast?

I'm enthusiastic and do Qedoc as well.

(So far as I can tell from these forums, a lot of people here have tools and services associated with Moodle, which they talk about, so I think it's OK for me to post here).

Indeed. No problem, I just wondered. smile

Cheers

Edit: Just saw your reply to Joseph's post.

I had a quick play with the software yesterday. Looks very slick. There have been lots of posts ref. offline question compilers over the years. Best wishes with this and any future Moodle "integration".

I've had some communication with James over the XML import/export format for quiz and he has provided quite a bit of useful documentation and added Moodle support to what looks like a useful tool.

I am currently assuming, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, that he is one of the good guys Күлкі

However, James, I would urge you in the name of transparency to fill in your profile and nail your colours to the mast. Who is making a buck on the back of Moodle and who isn't has been known to be a slightly touchy subject in the past.

Hello James,

The final product looks great, but I was not able to make it work for me sad. I downloaded the quiz editor and tried a few Math questions, but did not succeed with any "Algebra" or "LaTeX" formatting. The program does not seem to recognize them. I could not find either any "equation editor" to facilitate the typing of Math expressions, but since the interface is kind of complicated for my limited brain, it may be that it is available somewhere and I simply missed it. May be also the case that Math expressions are supposed to be given as images only... Is this correct? If there is an equation editor, could you please point at where to find it?

Can all the possible quiz formats offered in the program be converted into Moodle type quiz questions?

Thank you very much for sharing this work with all of us!

Cristina

Hi Cristina,

>did not succeed with any "Algebra" or "LaTeX" formatting.

It doesn't do those, but if you like, you can contact me here:

http://www.qedoc.org/wiki/index.php?title=Contact_Qedoc

and discuss adding support for it.

Currently Qedoc has a lot of specialist maths question types, but its maths isn't interoperable with anything yet.

>Can all the possible quiz formats offered in the program be converted into Moodle type quiz questions?

For the answer, please see the post I added above just now in reply to someone else.

(BTW: getting back to Moodle - does Moodle understand any Maths language? I haven't looked into this yet).

Cheers,

James McCormack
