You could use the assignment module for this type of question and let students upload a textfile...

I have been showing off moodle as part of a Computer Based Learning course and we were discussing the idea of an essy type question in the quiz module. We came to the conclusion that an assignment made more sense as an essay is usually something written over a moderatly extended amount of time, and would ideally be done using a word processor. We also compared the moodle quiz module to the Blackboard equivalent and moodle came out very well.
Better even: use the journal. Now that the HTML editor has been improved a lot it should it is like working with a word processor!

Martin, can't use the journal because the essay quiz is not limited to one question... It consist of many question.
You could specify multiple question in the Journal assignment. Just use the list button in the editor or the <ul> or <ol> tags in HTML.
Alternatively you could also setup more than one journal...
