Hi

I tried up upgrade our moodle server today from 1.5.3 to 1.7.1
I made a backup copy of C:\Moodle and D:\Moodledata should anything go worng.

I downloaded 1.7.1 and replaced the c:\moodle with the new folder.  I started moodle and all looked good - got right the way to the end and to the admin login screen.

I copied over my config.php file from my backup moodle folder, but this did not appear to make any difference when I restarted moodle - only the new admin account would work and I had no courses etc.

OK at this stage I give up with the upgrade - delete the 1.7.1 moodle folder and replace it with the original moodle folder - however I'm now left with a problem saying that there is a connection problem to the database or the config.php file. 

Can anyone help?

When you restored to your backup did you also restore your database rather than just the moodle folder?
I don't think the Moodle 1.5.3 will work with the same database as the one the 1.7.1 just updated tables on so you will need to drop that and restore your original.
Apologies if you have already done this, but sometimes it is important to check fundamentals.
