I have been thinking of this issue for a while: why not treat resources like tasks like project management tools do. For example, the way dotProject does (www.dotproject.net) This may not be too hard to implement for a php programmer.
The benefit of this is that new properties of type task could be associated with resources, and set by either teachers or students: start time, end time, progress completed (in percentage), status (Not Started, In Progress, Completed), Estimated Time to Complete (in hours), priority level...
One of the nice things about this approach is that one could then mark a task as completed, and it could change color to become grayed or give some other visual clue what has been done so far. Does anybody know if this type of thing is in the works? Is there a way to find out through the Moodle.org web site?
Could anybody else use that type of functionality? I know it was partially implemented by a college in Ontario for a previous release of Moodle, but it looks like that functionality was not taken over by the main branches that followed.
By adding a level of indirection, much of what you want can already be accomplished. Create an offline assignment that links to the resource. The offline assignment holds the bookkeeping details (start date, end date, grade). If you want Moodle to track more information about resource usage, use SCORM instead of offline assignment.

Currently, the instructor hides/shows a resource or activity manually but they need it to be done automatically upon a date/time setting. Is that possible?

One idea was to upload the file as a resource and link it to the calender, so students are aware of start and stop dates. Is there a way this can be done?
