Is it safe to just empty the table, and how do I avoid it to be so big in the future. I`m running 1.4.2.

Well, it is not safe to be running 1.5.4 on the internet. Too many known security vulnerabilities.

But to answer your question, yes it is safe to just truncate that table.

I really tried, but utf-8 migration was a way too challenging!

It is challenging only when the standard procedure fails. You can try it, though, without affecting your production site.
