I am a huge moodle fan
my site:
2100+ users
340+ courses
upgraded 1.7 (from 1.6.2) and it took ages. 43000+ role assignments!!!
Less than 24 hours later I have now had to back out 1.7
Performance was a real issue - 30+seconds (maybe 1+ min) to login.
Every subsequent action had major lag.
System was unusable and it has to be down to the roles.
Serious questions and warnings need to be raised about the stability and functionality of moodle 1.7
has this functionality been tested sufficiently? if not, why was a release made?
After all we now apparently have the backing/sponsorship of OU?
Please lets get this sorted before the wonderful moodle reputation is damaged.
Serious Performance issue with 1.7 - problem with roles???

Hmm.. Moodle.org has about 23000 role assignments and the upgrade took about ten minutes. You're using it now, obviously. We've found roles performance to be reasonable on a bunch of large servers (including the ones at OU).
The problem may be related to something else about your server configuration. Roles has meant a shift in how the database is accessed, so maybe your MySQL needs tuning. Perhaps you can post more info about your hardware and software to help us help you make the best use of Moodle.

Hi,
Sorry, but I don't read/reply in this forum regularly. You should provide all the performance-related information you can gather so someone else can help (versions of all software, hardware, patterns of use etc)
If you need seriously quick support that you can't get here in the public forums then http://moodle.com/support is an alternative. Perhaps someone needs to log in to your server and examine it, for example.
