Though UBUNTU is good it still needs quite a bit of RAM etc. For old PCs something like PuppyLinux seems very promising, it's so small that even a "live CD" session can run pretty fast. (It includes Mozilla, but has a quite easy interface for adding programs lika Firefox).

Sending a PuppyLinux CD could fill several purposes:
  • Get a machine working (or see if the machine itself may have gone bad) when Windows has gotten corrupted
  • See IF the machine would work with Puppy Linux
  • introduce how nice a Linux variant can work

Another possibility is using old PCs as thin clients and having one fairly decent PC as server. Dennis Daniels has some experience with that and Moodle.
