Using Moodle to help create a new service - and a challenge to overcome

Using Moodle to help create a new service - and a challenge to overcome

Colleagues and I have been asked to create a "Toolkit" for the large number of developers of a new process within the UK Health Service. The Toolkit needsd to include a lot of quite prescribed processes - do this first, do this next, fill ut this form next.

The users are georaphically spread and we want encourage them to check their understanding and implementation with others, and to share difficulties they encounter - which is classic Forum territory.

Moodle looks an excellent option for us with its many featuers (forums, news, calendars, resoure management) ... BUT (there's always a but) ... the language of "course" is a turn-off. This isn't about learning for personal development, it's everything to do with delivery of a process for which the Toolkit will rpovide key resource material.

I'd be very pleased to hear of other similar implementations ... and indeed to hear your thoughts. Crucially, is Moodle a good tool ... or can you think of ways to make it so?

Well, David, I am using Moodle in a traditional academic environment. However, we have done several less traditional things. First of all, we do have online student orientation for all students. This "course" is being designed around tasks (Remove holds from your registration, register for class, etc) with resources such as presentations and pdf forms as applicable. The second "thing" we have is what I have called a "Skills" class. It is a repository of all sorts of resources, organized by topic, so "how to interview for a job" is a topic with resources under it. Students can do these in any order at any time. Neither course includes discussion, problems are handled by interaction with an advisor at the school.

Both of these objects are still called "course" but they seem to fulfill some of what you are trying to do. If you can tweak the language and call what you are doing workshop, or whatever won't turn off your group, it should work. The advantage of Moodle is the ease of use and low learning curve.

This is not for Choose and Book is it??? smile

Yes Moodle is VERY powerful. As a Learning and Training specialist I'm surprised you've not come across it before. It will do what you want and you can tweak the "course" bits etc.

Cheers

Stephen

Thank you Irmgard for your thoughtful reply. Helpful.

And indeed thank you Stephen. What you are doing at Stradbroke College looks interesting and useful for your students. By the way, I think you'd be astonished by the fact that Moodle is almost unknown in corporate Britain - very few in the Organisational Learning world have even heard of it let alone have any working knowledge. So, it really is a case of where the academic world leads, business may follow. big grin

Both of you have offered some useful pointers which I appreciate.

David

We have used Moodle to support the business of a software users group. The main change we made was to create a new language pack in which many parts were renamed. Course became Section and so on..

Yes. I agree we can adapt moodle for many situations. Moodle is a CMS and I have used it for a church website and his communities The best way is to change the langage pack and to "translate" any moodle terms for some term business oriented or something more related to your situation.

you must your situation as network of group and attach a space to each group.

Sorry for my english.

I'm really not sure that you want to use Moodle. There are other CMS like Drupal and Joomla that you probably should consider. I don't deny that Moodle is adaptable to fit the situation, but Drupal or Joomla might put you a lot closer to where you want to start out at.

Good Luck
