Hardware requirements

Hi,

I am a small hosting provider. I run my business on VPS accouts and cPanel.

Recently I've got two new customers that had installed Moodle from fantastico.

Since I nottest some decreasing on server performance I tried to figure out why and I found that it could be because of these installations.

I had asked my customers about their goals:

- Moodle will display tree courses
- Usage wil not be intensive
- Number of users will be between 25 and 30
- Max users at the same time between 5 and 10
- There will not be quiz on line
- Some file sharing

VPS details:

192 MB memory >> boost to 768 MB
Processor #1 Vendor: AuthenticAMD
Processor #1 Name: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 248
Processor #1 speed: 2187.383 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 1024 KB

Processor #2 Vendor: AuthenticAMD
Processor #2 Name: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 248
Processor #2 speed: 2187.383 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 1024 KB

NOTE: I have another 40 small accounts on this VPS
My question is:

- Do you think this server can handle my customers specifications for their moodle system?

- If not, what do you think it could be a good configuration?

I hope you can help me.

Thank you,

Antonio

If I got you right, you own a virtual server equivalent to AMD 2 GHz, RAM 192 MB to max. 768, where you already host 40 small static websites. The question is whether you can put two Moodle customers on this server.

The Moodle customers are not going to use chat nor quiz modules, will gurantee 5-10 concurrent users (each).

On a first guess, I would say yes, without taking into account the other 40 users (I don't really know their load). The reason is, assuming 40 MB per Apache process your peak RAM usage will be 800 MB which coincides with your maximum.

Without quiz, which is database intensive, your bottleneck will be the CPU. The AMD 2 GHz is not a bad one, although the current state of art is more towards 3 GHz.

BTW, all the time I assumed the OS is Linux. If Windows there is a different forum for that.

Also notice that, in this calculation there is almost no tolerance for anything unexpected. So the chances are high that one or the other customer will start complaining about performance, provided the Moodle classrooms are also user as planned!

Thank you very much for your help.

I will be monitoring the server closely and then I'll see what I should do.
