I know you posted this message some time ago now, but I also have a need for exactly this kind of option. Getting students to provide critical discussion on our institution is hard work. If they could post anonymously we think it would encourage far more involvement. I've used the anonymous option in the third-party feedback tool and that really helped with over 90% contributing.
As a "particularly helpful moodler" do you know if this option will make it into any future moodle release, if not, how much work was involved in implementing it and are you able to supply the patch(es)?
