Posts not mailed if "sitemailcharset" not selected

I don't know whether this is a feature, or a bug, so I'm posting it here. If no "sitemailcharset" is selected on the  Administration->Configuration->Variables page, no posts are mailed to subscribers and all the internal messages sent by e-mail arrive blank to their recipients.

This did certainly not happen to us. We did not have a sitemailcharset selected but our emails were sent fine. So it must be something specific to your mail server.
