Here's a new type of reflective journal mod if anyone would like to test it:
Basically, this crazy mod is a combination of assignments and dialogue rolled up into a mod that is based on the glossary!!! I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me out. I won't be able to spend any more time on it for awhile, so I need testers. I would appreciate feedback on the usability and functioning. Also, if anyone who might find this useful could help out, the cron/email functions need finished (currently the email functions do work, except that teachers are for some reason getting two email alerts when students submit entries).
Okay, that said, here is the basics of the mod (from the README text):
This module allows you to add a reflective type of journal to a course. It is good for creating several reflective type essay questions for a course that are collected together in one place and for one average grade. It can also be used as a "private place" for students to take notes or keep files.
Briefly, journal entries are private to students unless submissions are allowed and the entry is submitted. Submissions can be allowed all of the time, none of the time, or restricted to a specific time period. If submitting entries is enabled, then when either the entry is ready to be submitted for grading,
or the student wants to submit it for feedback, the student can click on the submit link. This sends that entry to the teacher view of the journal. Students can also add an attachment to their entry (similar to an upload assignment). The teacher can then add a comment, grade the entry/attachment, or both. The student then sees the grade and/or comments(s) for that entry. The student will not be able to resubmit an entry until the teacher "marks" the entry and removes it from the Waiting Feedback tab. Email alerts can be enabled to send the teachers an email when a student submits an entry.
If grading is enabled, the teacher can set the grading scale that will be used for each submitted entry. An average (mean) score of all of the graded entries for each student appears in the course grades for each journal.
Teachers' entries will show up in the Questions tab. Questions can be categorized, for example, Topic One Questions, etc. Questions can also be automatically linked in course resources if Auto-linking is turned on in the Filters, and if set for that question (similar to a Glossary). Each question entry has a link for students to add an entry to their journal in answer to that question (similar to an online assignment).
If enabled, students can add comments to entries. Teachers are always able to comment on submitted entries. Email alerts can be enabled to alert teachers when a student posts a comment on an entry, and alert the student when a teacher posts a comment (similar to Dialogue).
An icon link to a printer-friendly version of either the entire journal, or each individual entry can be enabled.
From your description/readme this sounds interesting as a possible vehicle for multi part online essay type questions, related around a single topic. Is thhis a reasonable alternative interpretation of its functionality?
(Essay questions in Lesson module appear to only take place offline - unless we have that wrong)
Which version of Moodle has it been tested with? 1.6.2? Any chance of a screenshot?
Just uploaded this interesting module. Installation went smoothly. However, when I try access the Journal I get the following message:
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, firstname.lastname@example.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I am not sure if this is my host, or a problem with the module. I will continue to play around with it.
I will use it in my Internet Apps class this week and let you know if we hit any snags.
Thank you for this.
Yes Andy, it would work for that. One thing I don't like about essay questions in the Lesson, is that once the student has submitted it, it's gone. They have no way of going back to edit, or resubmit their original question(s).
Ralph that's odd. Did you get all the success messages when installing, and then you added a journal to a course, and then when you clicked on the journal link you got this error? Can you send me the url address that comes up with the error message.
Thanks Art for testing.
I should have attached some screenshots--here are some.
I had no error messages during the installation or when adding a journal to a course. Here is the url of the error message:
Thanks Cahrdelle, I will give that a try.
Did you happen to see my post in the certificate beta 3.1 ready for testing forum?
This looks great, except I can't test it as my version of Moodle is wrong.
Module "myjournal" (2006080701) could not be installed. It requires a newer version of Moodle (currently you are using 2006050511, you need 2006050512)
I'm on 1.61+ and stuck with it for a while as we running an evaluation pilot so the core system has to stay as it is until the testing is over. Hopefully I'll have a second test server running by December (with the IT team). Quite annoying really as I want to have a play with this!
Hmmm, well I supposed I put that version in only because that was the version I was using at the time. It should work with any 1.6 Moodle version. Go ahead and change the required version in the mod version.php file from 2006050512 to 2006050511 and give it a go.
Can you help on this?
I realize now that I added the goup function to mod.html, however it doesn't do anything!!! Perhaps sorting authors by group would be a good thing--I'll try to get to that--remind again.
I have installed this mod in 1.7. It works great - very nice module - we'll try and test it a wee bit and get back to you. So far, so good; thanks.
No, of course not, all comments by teachers should be added. Please update to the My Journal for 1.7 and that should fix the problem. Be sure to do a backup first--either of your db or the course!
Glad you could use this mod.
