Resolved. Changing the tempfiledir to the sessions directory did work. I had a type-o last night that I was too tired to see.
I still don't understand why I couldn't write to /tmp, but I don't think I really care at this point. I'm sure this will show up again when I update, so I might look a little more at that point.
