We multiple databases on our Moodle server and would like to develop a block that queries a central database containing initial assessment results. Does anyone have any info/suggestions on the possibilities of doing this?

Did you ever figure this out? I'm using Moodle 1.9.2 and I'm currently trying to clone the global $DB object and then tweak it a little to make it a MSSQL database.
It's kind of a shot in the dark. It's either that or I'll use the PEAR stuff. I'm still an absolute newbie on PHP though =(
