Initiating Wiki

Initiating Wiki

Hi,

I'm a moodle newbie as teacher at my school. As first person to initiate a wiki, I have serious problems to get it run, even having read several internet pages on that.
I opened a new wiki at a new topic, entered a name and a description and some features, the page asks me for. Bt I cannot initiate a single new entry page to start the wiki itself. Typing words in bracket or doing the camelcase business does not work at all.
I have no further idea how to start.

Tahnks for help in advance

Hi, Bernd.  Hmmm.  The only time I have heard of this trouble is with someone who tried to upload her first page instead of treating it as a text page (as in, putting a text title in the "Page Name" slot instead of "Choose a first page" to upload).  Is it possible that's what you chose to do as well?  Uploading the first page seems to work for some, but not for others.  It has never worked for me, for instance.  If you use plain text to name the first page of your wiki, subsequent pages using brackets or CamelCase should work.

If you did not try to upload your first page and are still having problems, is there a way you could give us a screen shot to perhaps clarify a little bit more what is happening with your page?  Thanks,

Lesli

Hi Bernd.  I'm a relative newbie myself, but I've got wikis working.  It actually is not complicated.  Here's step by step for a simple one, you can get fancy once you've got the basic moves down.
1.  Add an activity >> wiki.  This will open up the description page.
2.  Give your wiki a name - the very first box to fill in.  For example, My New Wiki.
3.  Don't mess with anything else - just hit "save changes".  This will open the html editor.  You are now editing the front page of your wiki.
4.  I usually use the front page as a sort of table of contents; to follow this model, type something like this in the html editor.  The important thing is to put SOMETHING in square brackets:

Table of Contents
[page 2]
[page 3]
[page 4]

and...save.  You will have a lovely little front page with links (blue question marks) that will open page 2, page 3, or page 4 for you to do with as you wish.  The same steps can be repeated ad infinitum.  On an existing page, edit in the name of a new page you want to create in [sq. brackets] ==> this becomes your link to that page.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Re: Initiating Wiki

Hi Russ,

thanks for your answer. It helps me getting closer to my problem. Item 1 is easy as well as item 2, both seems to run as you describe it. The problem comes in item 3 and is easy to describe. You say "This will open the html editor.". This is exactly what does not happen in my case. I simply get a page in the same browser saying that there are no pages in the wiki yet and a button to treat the wiki. Pressing this button brings me back to the "description page". The circle is closed. sad
Any idea what to do? I tried both the internet explorer and firefox as browsers - so it does not seem to be a typical browser problem.

Thanks in advance for any hints..
Bernd

How frustrating!  I have no idea why it doesn't work, but here's one more thing for you to try.  Further down the description page in the "optional" section put in something in the "page name" line.  It can be the same or different than the name you gave at the top.  Maybe your installation requires an explicit name for the first page.  Then click save and let us know if that does the trick.

Sorry Russ, it doesn't fix the problem. sad
I would like to give you a positive answer for your efforts but I cannot.

Thanks anyway,

Sorry Bernd, I don't know any specifics about the HTML editor.  I'm stumped on your problem and am hoping someone else can step up with a lead for you.

It sounds as if you might have HTML options turned off somewhere, but I'm not sure.  The first main place to check for this, if you are an admin of your site, is in the admin block on the main page.  Go into "Configuration," then "Editor Settings" and make sure you have "allow" chosen.  (See attached)

As the picture indicates, each user can also decide to allow HTML or not in his/her profile settings.  If you already had "allow" chosen in the above place, check your own profile user settings.  Somewhere under forum notification choices it prompts: "When editing text" and gives "use HTML editor" as one of the choices.

If you have HTML editor chosen in both of these places, then we need to call in someone else as it might be a coding issue, and that is beyond my area of expertise.  I do hope the solution is as simple as this, though.  Let us know!

I seem to be having the same exact issue. I am also a newbie using 1.5 and firefox browser. I can setup a title and description but nothing else even if I am logged in as Teacher or Admin. Can't figure how to make first entry.  Thanks for any help.

I've discovered that I can edit a wiki as admin on the start page, but can't edit a wiki within the course as admin. Any suggestions?

Were you trying to setup wiki in advance before students were enrolled? i was. once i enrolled my students i had no problems. not sure if wiki is disabled in empty courses or i may have "accidently" fixed a setting w/o realizing it. good luck smile

Re: Initiating Wiki

I was recently able to reproduce this problem.  It appears to be a combination of not having students enrolled and/or groups set up, together with mismatched groups mode selections.  It's too long to go through all the permutations.  But it looks like the process will work properly if you choose "Groups" (rather than Teacher or Student) and then, further down on the description page, choose "No groups" (rather than visible groups or separate groups).  You should then get the HTML editor to open.

If you want to have visible or separate groups, your screen may look like this after you save the description page:
unknown wikiNotice on the left it says "wiki for - unknown -" but over on the right there is a drop down box to choose "other wikis" which displays the available groups.  Pick one of the groups and the HTML editor will open so you can compose the front page of the wiki.  You can later return to this screen to write the front page for each of your groups.

Hope this helps!

Re: Initiating Wiki: Wiiki editor

by Ruh Nabil -
I am glad to have found this topic, as I have been experiencing teething problems with Wiki pages on- using Moodle 1.6.2

I am able to use the HTML editor but that does not recognize Wiki formatting tags and there doesn't appear to be an option for a Wiki editor.

What's more, the pages I have created don't look like any Wiki pages I have seen before - and I have seen quite a few.

Is there something I am missing here?

Re: Initiating Wiki: Wiiki editor

The fault, Dear Nabil, lies not in your moodle but in the interpretation of options itself.

The options are:

HTML Mode

You have the following possibilities:

No HTML
Escapes all HTML-Tags. Formatting is done through the WikiWords. Filters work in this Mode.
Safe HTML
Some Tags are allowed and are displayed. There are no filters active which need tags in this mode !
HTML only
No WikiWords, just HTML. This option allows the use of the HTML-Editor.
If you want an editor which looks like MS Word, where you can highlight, make bold, italics etc, use the last option HTML Only. Incidentally, this is also the easiest one and is practically a wysiwyg editor.

Somehow, this is one rare placein Moolde where the options have not been described properly.

Re: Initiating Wiki: Wiki editor

by Ruh Nabil -
Thanks for your response, however it has not resolved the issue for me, but has prompted me to explore the various options more fully. Here is what I have found:

No HTML
I am able to use some Wiki tags with this option - including '''' ...''' for bold, '' ... '' for italic. # for numbered lists, and * for bulleted lists.

I can use single brackets for [Wiki links], however when I try an expression of the form [http://www.eytv4scf.net Education, Youth, Technology and Values for a Sustainable Common Future], I don't get the desired result.

The Wiki tags - = ... =, == ... ==, etc. do not translate into header levels 1, 2 ...; and I get some weird formatting with the use of : for indentation; a single colon has no effect, multiple colons - :: or ::: - produce a series of indentations

Although the option is labeled No HTML, I find that I can use some HTML tags - including <b> ... </b>, <i> ... </i>, <h1> ... </h1>, <h2> ... </h2>, <div style=" ...."> ... </div> and <table> tags.

However, other HTML tags such as <a href=" ... "> ... </a>, and <img src=" ...."> do not work; the former is converted to simple anchor tags in the source - <a> ... </a> - and the latter shows neither image nor tags.

Safe HTML
In this mode, the Wiki tags behave - or misbehave - the same way as described above, however, somewhat inexplicably, this option allows more limited use of HTML tags than does the No HTML. with bold, italic and header tags working correctly. but <div> and <table> tags bo not work, and appear as written.

HTML Only
This option allows me full use of HTML tags, but does not translate any of the Wiki tags.

Btw I don't especially like Moodle's HTML editor - although I will not go into details of my critique here - and like MSWord even less, having had the good fortune to use WordPerfect for 25 years.

I generally use the Text mode for adding HTML formatting and links in Moodle, and my preference is for Wiki coding - supplemented by HTML when appropriate - that I find simpler and cleaner. I particulalry appreciate the Wiki header tags and the automatic table of contents that is generated from the Wiki header tags in all other Wiki spaces I have worked in.
