Hi Frank,

GIFT is for questions such as you would find on a quiz. They can be of several types: multiple choice, true/false, numerical, short answer, and fill-in-the-blank. It looks like your document is more like a worksheet than a quiz (I think you're asking the students to perform calculations and write the answers). Anyway, I'll pretend that it's a quiz with six numeric questions. If so, this could be your GIFT file:

::08-12-01:: Calculate $\frac{3}{5}+\frac{7}{11}$ to the nearest thousandth.{ #1.236}::08-12-02::Calculate $\frac{3}{5}-\frac{7}{11}$ to the nearest thousandth.{ -0.036}::08-12-03::Calculate $\frac{3}{5}\cdot \frac{7}{11}$ to the nearest thousandth.{ #0.382}::08-12-04::Calculate $\frac{3}{5}:\frac{7}{11}$ to the nearest thousandth.{ #0.6}::08-12-05::What is 12% of ¥8.50?{ #1.02}
::08-12-06::What is 66% of 600kg?
{
#396
}The general format of a numeric question is

::question_name :: question_text { #

answer }

Click the question mark next to "Import questions from a file" on the Editing Quiz page to see a nice description of the full GIFT format.

If you wanted your students to write their answers as rational numbers reduced to lowest terms, you may be able to use a short answer type question with a regular expression. I haven't done this.

In my examples, I used only one dollar sign. Moodle wants you to put two. The reason I didn't use two is that the math filter would have then rendered the LaTeX!

Also, let me warn you again that after converting your files to GIFT form, you still need to escape certain characters, such as "{" and "=". Let's see what the first problem would look like:

::08-12-01:: Calculate $\frac\{3}\{5}+\frac\{7}\{11}\$ to the nearest thousandth.{ #1.236}

Save that step until last.

Send more examples!
