The short description of this module under Help is:

Attendance

This module allows you to record the attendance of the each participant for a particular event.

What is an event - I don't see this term in the moodle glossary...

Is it possible to use participarion in forum(s) as a measure of  attendance?

This description is a bit off. The event described there is actually an off-line activity, usually attendance at an on-site course.

Automatic attendance sets a participant as present for a given day if they perform ANY activities, forums included.
