I'm a new Moodler - my site will have its inauguration later this month when school starts. A skeleton of my site is up at <dabih.org>. You can enter as a guest with a key (perkin for Chemistry and feynman for Physics).
One of the reasons I switched to Moodle was to supplement the Socratic dialogues from class. Students prepare whiteboards and discuss these with the class. I'm planning on students posting a summary of the discussion online (I'll post the digital pictures to make it easier for them). In the Chemistry Unit 1 Forum, the sample student work is from last year.
I don't know if others will respond to boards that weren't theirs to prepare but I'm mildly optimistic. It is a requirement that students post to their boards so I expect that to be the bare minimum participation (and their grades are linked there as well).
At the very least, the forums will be a digital record of the whiteboards from class. When kids are absent and they miss whiteboarding, I usually hear groans as they understand this was important and they can't make it up. It is not as good as being there but it's better than nothing.
