this is what i find so amazing about these forums. the 'powers that be' at college produced an 'edict' saying no avatars on the front page.

i tried a very untidy fix by commenting out some lines in the pix/index.php but was not happy with it - i know nothing about .php

then i searched the forums - and found this, did as the instructions said and it does exactly what i want.
