Courses and course formats

I have an instructor who want to change how his students access their courses - but I don't want to change how the rest of my school works, so I'm hoping this can be done through a course format.

The way I've got our school set up is something like this:

Program/Category (example, Computer Repair & Networking)
    Section/Metacourse (Computer Repair)
       Course (A+ Hardware)
       Course (A+ Software)
    Section/Metacourse (Networking)
       Course (Networking Fundamentals)
       Course (Networking Clients)
       Course (Networking Servers)

Each program has 20-30 courses, and while most programs have only one section, others have up to four sections.  Each section is a metacourse and the proper course goes into that metacourse.  This instructor would like a 'Metacourse' format that hides the courses inside it unless they are in that metacourse.

Another option could be a Metacourse block - possibly modify the My Courses block so that it shows Metacourses with a + beside it, click to view courses.

Anyone doing something like this?
