Site Backup always fails

Our site backup always fails - see the progress info below.  I have checked directory permissions and there does not seem to be a problems anywhere within the site.  While the matter is non-urgent because I use mysql dump (for safety) and also copy the whole directory to another location in the early hours of the morning, I would like to have an answer.  When my teachers try to backup an individual course to transfer it elsewhere, they receive the identical message.   Our version is 1.5.3+.  NOTE: In the settings below, we select "All" not "Course" for Users.

Thanks

Hi Rick,
If the error message is anything to go by (and sometimes it isn't) it looks like the permissions on the directory aren't correct. Are all the folders in moodledata owned by the apache user or writable by all?

p.s Did you really need to copy all those lines with ....................?

Re: Site Backup always fails

Paolo,
Here is my directory listing showing that most of the folders are 755 and not 777.  I believed that 755 would be sufficient as Apache (I thought) was effectively writing the files.  Are you saying I should set the whole moodledata directory to 777
Some of these folders are 777 and I don't know why they are different.

Sorry about the ....... but I left them there to show that the database backup was large but the process is not hanging in the creation - only at the write.

Thanks

No, looks absolutely fine - Sorry, red herring!
given that the folders are owned by apache, group and other don't even need read access (700).
Good luck in your search.

Have solved this problem.  I had entered pathways to gzip and gunzip (correctly - I checked) but Moodle didn't like this for some reason.  When the paths to the two programs were removed, everything performed as it should.  I am running a Linux box and this was recommended so why did it fail I wonder?

Hi Rick, just curious, how many courses do you have to backup for your site backup, what kind of specification of hardware you have for your linux box (and which Linux distribution you are using), and, finally but most importantly, how long does it take for the site backup to complete?? I would like to compare with our setting as currently the backup/restore does not really work for us.. Thanks!
