Nobody seems to have answered you yet. I was busy at the time. I would like to extend the mathematical question to include expressions, which would even accept fractions, than, of course. Even the format 2 3/4 (interpreted as 2 + 3/4) would be good.
In the meantime, one could use the embedded question, short answer which interprets strings. But one might need a whole "string of strings".
"40/3" "13 1/3" "13.3" etc.
There is a regular expression module by Joseph R that could make that more compact and flexible.
I'm hoping to get together people interested in improving the math questions, maybe your colleague would be interested?
