Hi Anders,

I got a summary from the publisher. It seems to be a very interesting introduction. Its not a manual, but a pedagogical help.

The publisher contacted me about it (promising to donate a small amount to Moodle).

I'm looking forward to seeing it, but it's a bit odd that William Rice has never really engaged on this site...

Good news!

But on the website, the publisher says "Expected May 2006". Can someone post a note here when s/he gets it? This way we know it's available. Thx!

Cheers.

Today, it says "available now". If I can get a copy I'll write a short review about it smile

Svar: New book about Moodle - short review

by Anders Berggren -
This is intended to be a short review of
William Rice's book (which is available and
was distributed to me without too much delay)
but it is difficult not to compare it to 'Using Moodle'
by Jason Cole. The two books cover approximately
but not exactly the same content. The intended audience
is pretty much the same. The books differ somewhat
in outline and style. They are both well written, informed
and informative. Since Moodle is so dynamic, chances are
that some information might get quickly outdated though.
The books e.g. pay a lot of attention to the Workshop and
Wiki modules. WS is under revision in order to improve
the interface and enhance usability and there is a DFwiki
module candidating to replace the standard Wiki. Any such
changes will require users to update/upgrade their knowledge.

I would suggest that you start with 'Using Moodle' which is a
well-structured introduction and continue with Rice's book
which does the same and then takes things a bit further.
Rice's book is valuable for Moodle beginners but it is helpful
to experienced Moodlers as well, at least it was to me.

Two books? Well, I believe that variation in itself is helpful
for learning as we know is repetition.

I have no affiliation or relation with the publisher of
this book other than as a customer but they offer some
other titles in the same field that I found definitely interesting.

Hi Anders,

I red Willian Rice book this weekend. My opinion:

  • The book is a good introduction for all people working the first time with moodle with small systems and having teacher and admin access to the system. The author explains several times at the same place functions for both. For all readers only with teacher access I think Jason Coles book is the better choice.
  • But think about this: Jason Cole wrote about moodle 1.4, William about moodle 1.5
and Fredi Gertsch in his german book at Addison&Wesley, that I got today about 1.6.
  • I found im William Rices book some new technical tipps and ideas for me. He gives at several places additional informations from a pedagogical view about the use of activities.
