Hi all,
Has anyone ever used a Sony SDT-5200 Tape Drive? Does anyone know what an Apaptec AHA-2940W/2940UW is?
When trying to install anything Linux, the installation hangs at hardware detection.
If I install debian without the card in, it hangs on boot with a driver loading message.
Here's the error on debian:
scsi1 : Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.36
<Adaptec 2940 Ultra SCSI adaptor>
aic7880: Ultra Wide Channel A........
The error goes on but it just sits.
Thanks,
Martin

This is a SCSI adapter card (a so called host bus adapter). This allows you to attach SCSI devices (hard disks, CDs, tape drives, and so on) to your computer.
As far as I know, this card has been fully supported under linux for a long time (I've had machines with this card in the past).
By the way, the 'error' you show is just the message telling you the kernel has detected the card and it's scanning the SCSI bus to look for the attached SCSI devices, i.e,, it's not an error.

Thanks Iñaki,
So why is it hanging all the time?
Not that it matters any more, I'm not going to use it now, I've just lost the entire contents of my server, 3 moodle installs and 2 media wikis trying to get it to work by reinstalling Debian.
I thought that XAMPP had backed up correctly, turns out I didnt notice that the backup command is experimentle.
I'm in a bad mood, half a years work lost in one day,

I don't know. Without having a complete boot log it quite difficult to diagnose it. It can be a million things. Did you have Debian installed before on that same server?
With respect to your contents disappearing, ff you didn't repartition your disks or re-created the filesystems, the contents are still there, so there is some hope.
On the other hand, making backups is not the important thing. Testing that you can restore them is what's really important.

Yes, I did have debian on before, I will try booting again but I will leave it longer, it is a slow machine, it may just need time.
Unfortunatly I did format the hdd
I think I will wait until 1.6 is released before I try rebuilding. (Hope you didnt think I was taking it out on you
,
I was damn anoyed earlyer, I've calmed down now.
The idea of getting the tape drive was to have a better way of backing up. I hope I can get it working, is there any way of seeing the boot logs?

Good News, I got the tape drive working. I restored the factory defaults on the SCSI controlers BIOS and IT WORKS.
