Best server characteristics for Moodle

Hi,

I am buying a server to host several moodle projects (about 5 moodles). I estimate to have 150 courses and 500 students running at the same time as maximum in this dedicated server.

Any one can recommend me which are the best characteristics for a server to host 5 moodles with this activity in term of:

Processor(s)
RAM
Storage
RAID
etc.

You can stick with 1 server, so it needs to be quite sturdy.

Processor(s) : Dual opteron, as fast as you can afford
RAM : at least 2 gig, get 4 if you have the cash
Storage : I'm running such a setup with a 74GB WD Raptor, only using 20% but it depends on your cours contents.
RAID : get at least a RAID 1 with hotspare. You don't want your entire setup to go down due to one disk crash

Thanks a lot Pieterjan!

I have asked a budget to DELL computers for a server with the following configuration:

  • Processor: Dual Xeon 3.0 GHz
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Storage: 250 GB SATA 1 inch ( x 2)
  • RAID 1

What do you think?

Thanks,

Mario

This kind of setup is great to run moodle on for only 500 users, it should work like a charm.
