One other issue I noticed to complicate the problem: the description does appear, but only in a certain student view. If the student opens a course section and directly clicks on an activity, the description accompanying a PDF file or a video does not appear (see screenshots 1 and 2: if I open the activity directly from the tiled view, there is no activity description shown). However, if the student starts from the beginning of a course section and goes through the section via the progress arrows (see screenshots 3 and 4), the description does appear (when navigating via the buttons the blue arrows are pointing at, activity descriptions are available for the same files that didn´t show a description when opened in the tiled view). Any idea how to make it so that no matter where the student views the activity, the activity description will show up?
