The original view is in list, too lengthy...We would like to default it on card view, but no idea where or how:
The card view we would like to have. (This is not at homepage, we like it to be on the homepage)

Just wondering if it's acceptable to set up the Dashboard page as the primary landing page where your users enter Moodle. That's where the Course overview block is situated in Moodle 3.x. In 4.0 and onwards, I believe there's a separate My courses page with the grid/tile view for enrolled courses.
The general Site home page offers less customisation options, unless you're working one of many custom themes that also add this view there.
In the screenshot, I can see you already use a custom theme, so have you contacted the developer for this bit?
