How to configure Moodle Mail Client to send mail via GMAIL?

Moodle 1.5 is hosted on Windows XP.

I can send mail via Google smtp server using <ssmtp> from the package <msmtp-1.4.5+cvs20060216-win32.zip>

I configured Moodle -> mail similarly, but keep getting login errors when Moodle tries to connect to the server.

I'd like to get help finding documentation, or examples, on how to use Google SMTP service.  I suppose the mail client does not have to be native Moodle.    I can use only "opensource" solutions.  Any suggestion is welcome...
