Why do you think that MAMP makes the things much harder? Download my package Moodle4Mac with the Moodle version you want to use. You should take only Moodle 3.9, 3.11, or 4.0. All other versions are not supported by Moodle but you can also try them.

The url to start with Moodle4Mac is http://localhost:8888/moodle
The port 8888 is configured by MAMP and I did. not change it.
