I would really like, at the configuration level, to be able to decide whether or not a user image is used in the forum list.  When users have not uploaded an image, it looks quite unprofessional to have a giant smiley or a whole list of giant smileys.

As a quick fix, until you get an answer from someone who knows what they are talking about, you could create a different icon to replace the smiley.

They live in your theme folder, the small one is called f2.png and the large f1.png (e.g. theme/theme_name/pix/u/f1.png). Just replace with the correct size icons of your making and same name.
