The terms used are "quiz attempts" and "question tries". In the quiz settings, set the question behaviour to "Interactive with multiple tries". The number of tries for a question is set in the question settings under the heading "Multiple tries". For a single try, do not provide any hint. For two tries, provide one hints. For three tries, provide two hints, etc.
The behaviour of the questions varies depending on the setting made in the quiz settings. As mentioned by Marcus, let us know if you use another question behaviour.
