Opening a second attempt releases grades from first attempt!

When using the marking workflow we noticed that, even when the status of the marking workflow does not yet release the grades, the grades are released when a second attempt is openend.

Is this by design?

I understand some logic behind this, but we were a bit surprised as well. This makes it so that you can not submit a 'blind' attempt for an assignment if you have a second attempt at the same assignment.

What happens in our case:

  1. Teacher grades everything, but does not release the grades yet
  2. When a teachers grades below the 'grade to pass', the teacher already opens a second attempt
  3. Later, when everything is graded, the teacher wants to release all the grades at one specific time to all students.

Right now this seems impossible to do as described above. It involves extra steps for a teacher, they need to do it like this:

  1. Teacher grades everything, but does not release the grades yet
  2. When everything is graded, the teacher can release all the grades at one specific time to all students
  3. The teacher then needs to find the students with a mark below the 'grade to pass'
  4. The teacher needs to open a new attempt for these specific students

So there's a work-around, but I understand the confusion. When a teacher doesn't release a grade but gives the student a new attempt, it should still respect the marking workflow setting.

Could qualify as a bug?

Also found out that when you view the 'view all assignments' page, the marking workflow still says 'ready to release'. But that now counts for attempt number 2. The first attempt has been released. So that also is a bit confusing for teachers.
