In the mean time I have received more information.
The situation is not as bad as it sounds in that newswire thing. I guess that is some sort of "news release" for paid customers. On this end they say "the WebCT licence has been extended period".
Swiss Virtual Campus [1] is continuosly evaluating LMS systems. In their 2003 evaluation the big contenders were BlackBoard and WebCT - Moodle was not even mentioned [2]. Two years later not only Moodle made to the list, but also received favourable comments [3].
A new task force has been appointed recently for a new round of evaluations [4]. May be after they've got bitten by this so called
BB-WebCT merger! I believe Moodle is again a candidate.
