How to display activity completion in a book, label, or page

Moodle books, labels, pages, lessons etc often have urls pointing to other activities.

Is there a way to display whether or not an activity is completed to the right of the url link?

Presumably some javascript and ajax calls might accomplish this - is there any example code?

The OneTopic course format does that but only for hard links listed in topic/section descriptions (not for within other activities). But interesting thought.

If the authenticated users could get their webservice tokens without having to resend the username and password then that would help a lot as I could use webservices.
