Have searched for some references to XAMPP - found some but not directly related to the question - if we missed any apologies - relevant links are welcome.
We are moving our Moodle to an almost dedicated Linux server from a shared Windows server. Ubuntu server is the chosen flavour.
Question - we now have a choice of XAMPP or ubuntu packages for MySQL, PHP, APache etc.
XAMPP (+security edits) is probably favourite as it is self contained and has all dependencies sorted etc, simpler to install and update etc.
BUT - packages may be slightly more efficient (no unnecessary modules etc)
Before starting - would welcome any comments from seasoned Linux/XAMPP users in case there are pitfalls or benefits either way of which we may be unaware.
PS - server is Xeon, 2Gb RAM, 160GB mirrored disc. Moodle 1.6 (probably), 2000 users, 50 active courses (estimated).
