Trash directory getting corrupted Moodledata

Hi, I'm using Moodle on Ec2 and currently using multiple instances connected to a common shared hard drive. Each instance contains the moodle directory locally (as well as localcache), and shares the moodledata directory.
I've been noticing the trash directory getting corrupted occasionally after which I usually have to unmount the hard drive and clean its structure (using e2fsck).

I was under the impression that Moodle had file locking built in and a file could not be written to when being accessed. Is this assumption wrong? Have other people who have used a shared hard drive seen similar things?

PS: I'm not using gluster, nfs or efs since shared hard drive gives much better performance.

Thanks!!
