We had the same problem... "My problem is that I need a way to track attendance of face-to-face modules. What I need is a way to create an activity for face-to-face modules that is a single tick box."
...so we used the Attendance plugin for attendance, and the Assignment activity to track completion and makeup time. This setup has been working for us well. The Assignment activity would provide the check box feature that would indicate to your student the completion status.
