A course module acts as an intermediate between the activity module and the course, and it's responsible for the availability and groups restrictions among other things.
Whenever you see a module's URL that has "id" parameter, this is the course module's id (whereas the module's id is usually the first letter representing the module, "f" for forum, "q" for quiz).
