We use forums more and more extensively for teaching purposes and encourage student participation, with the students taking the initiative, starting new discussions, and adding new content, including learning content.
This makes the pre-moderation of forums a must, both in the sense of preventing a breach of policy (personal information, abuse, etc) and in the sense of making sure the content posted does not contain incorrect information that the other students may learn from before the post is taken down.
The option (in the quiz settings) to not publish posts/comments until
approved by the teacher/moderator is essential in allowing the forum to
be used as a powerful learner-centered tool.
