Scheduler - manual email reminders error

We recently updated to Moodle 3.9 and reinstalled the latest Scheduler plugin. 

When I try to send manual reminders to students I get the 504: Gateway time out error.

I had 22 students in the reminder distribution list.  I could send the reminder to a smaller distribution list of 4-5 students. 

Any idea why I am timing out? Is this a problem with our 3.9 update?

We've been sending quite a number with manual reminders in Moodle 3.9, hence I don't think this is a version-specific issue. Difficult to say what happened here without being able to investigate on the side of the server.
