Dear Moodlers.

Your help is much appreciated concerning online distance quizzes. We're facing some issues with certain students stating that they've answered the questions of a quiz but Moodle didn't save their answers. Their attempts are either empty or half-empty.

Placing every question on one page, consulting the logs, tele-surveilling students are not sufficient to give us a physical proof that a student actually answered the quiz's questions but moodle didn't save them and this is causing a big issue here. Let's not forget that we made sure that the student didn't have any technical and/or connection problem,

Do you have any suggestion that can be used as a physical proof for this situation ?

This is almost certainly a sign that your server cannot handle the load. Therefore, you might be best asking in the hardware and performance forum.

Which logs have you consulted? You should check the apache/PHP/database logs on the server, as well as Moodle's logs. That gives you a lot of data about what happened. E.g. can you see 5xx errors in the web server logs? Also, any server monitoring you have (E.g. can you see that CPU load went up to 100%, or Apache ran out of connections?)

Thanks TIm for your answer.
From your expertise, in order to make this work, what would be the requirements for our server to handle such load ?
And by web server logs, you mean tracking (i.e. track what the student did on the webpage, like writing in a text zone, selecting a choice, scrolling down/up, etc.) ?

isn't this the same question you asked in the Hardware and performance forum https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=404490 and got replies? What were your findings?

Hey Visvanath, thanks for replying,

The link you shared was actually about the concurrent number of connections and yeah it has been solved.
What is asked here and I believe it is useful for the community, is how can we have a proof, a real proof, that a student was actually solving a quiz but for some reason Moodle didn't save the answers, as Rick was saying too.

We need a physical proof on what actually happened on the webpage of the student for a better judgment. For example, what if by mistake the student closed the browser and all his/her answers were deleted, or maybe the computer for some reason restarted. So we need to know what at least the student did on the webpage during a quiz.

Hi

Is there no chance that the student was right? Especially after this reply: "This is almost certainly a sign that your server cannot handle the load. Therefore, you might be best asking in the hardware and performance forum." https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=420645#p1695273 ?

And how do you plan to find physical evidance of an exam conducted in the past, on-line, remotely?

You could always have students take of a screenshot of what Moodle is showing them after they submit and before they click on finish review, and then post it somewhere in Moodle, or email it to you. (see my example.)

The logstore taaable will show if students actually clicked on the submit button.

Tim's suggestions are good, too. If your server is good, then the logstore table will be pretty accurate.

If the student gets to the point where they can take that screen-shot, the responses have been saved in Moodle, and there is no problem.

Yes, this is what I am saying. If the student takes a screenshot at this point, they would have a hard time arguing that moodle didn't save their results. You and I know that Moodle would have the results. However, I think this is what students are saying to Mario, that they do everything correctly in Moodle and then Moodle doesn't save their results.  If the student produces this screenshot and Moodle doesn't save their correct results, then something really strange is happening.

Thanks RIck, the idea of screenshot is good. Yet, not sure how much it is practical for students during a large quizzes (50+ questions)

You don't need a screenshot of every page, you just need to tell students (those who are complaining) that they should email you one screenshot after they do the final submit, right before clicking "final review," just like the screenshot that I posted.
