Responses don't add up!

Responses don't add up!

Number of replies: 6
A have a questionaire with 52 responses. Questions are all a choice of three possible answers (mostly, sometimes or never) with radio buttons. This is a typical example:

Mostly Mostly  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 40.4% (21)
Sometimes Sometimes  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 51.9% (27)
Never Never  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 11.5% (6)
TOTAL  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 100.0% 52

Note that the number of responses actually total 54, not 52! The first question asks users to type their name and there are 52 of them. All questions are set to 'response required'. Some of the totals come to other figures - here's an interesting one:

Mostly Mostly  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 7.7% (4)
Sometimes Sometimes  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 100.0% (53)
Never Never
(0)
TOTAL  hbar_l.gifhbar.gifhbar_r.gif 100.0% 52

The same sort of thing is happening with another copy of the questionnaire that has 150+ respondents.

Anyone any idea what is happening?

Apparently you did not get a response. I had this same problem.

I love your Emoticons. How did you get them in? Image files?

No response as yet - I did try contacting Mike direct but he's a busy chap giving all his time to tweaking this excellent Questionnaire resource!  I'm still using a version from @ December 2005 on my production system - the latest version still has a few things to iron out and seems to do unpleasant things to existing data + cross tabulation is still an issue, I believe.

The icons are simple graphics files that are linked to using html in the question response choice fields.  Something along the lines of:

<img border="0" src="/images/positive.gif" width="40" height="40" alt="Mostly"> Mostly

I haven't tried this in the newer version - I suppose you could use the Moodle editor feature to add a Moodle type smiley, perhaps? ..... smile

Hi -

Sorry I haven't been as responsive as I'd like to be. I have seen the 'not adding up' behaviour, but it seems to have to do with older versions and data. I really haven't looked at it again (I guess I should).

When you say "seems to do unpleasant things to existing data", what do you mean?

Hi Mike,

"unpleasant things" ... well basically when I upgraded the module it pretty much broke existing Questionnaires - at least the data that was already collected didn't show up properly in the analysis.  Responses where there were options to choose one of three answers sometimes only showed the results for two, custom html in the questions that added sound  to a clickable icon using the embed tag started throwing up browser scripting errors and not working ... all sorts of wierd things .. in the end I gave up & restored the older version along with the data until I have more time to mess with a test server.

Thanks for all your efforts on this project! big grin

Is it possible that you have users who have submitted a questionnaire but have unenrolled from the course or teachers that have submitted responses but aren't shown in the respondents list?

Thanks for the suggestion, Dan, but no, this is definitely not the case in either of the questionnaires where I've noted this.  The questionnaires are set for respond many / anonymous and the same login is used to access them.  A response is required for each question.
