Removing student assignment submission and status update

Dear All,

We are on Moodle 3.9.3; I am a global admin and when looking at Moodle assignment submissions I have the option to remove a submission. My idea of this functionality is that a student submitted and their status is Submitted for grading and if I remove their submission they have nothing submitted so their status should change to Not Submitted. However, what happens is that their submission gets removed but their status remains. Any pointers on what I am doing wrong?

Can you first revert to draft status? And then student can update their own submission.

I could if the student had submitted the wrong file in the right box, but what if the wrong file is submitted in the wrong box? And, apart from that, the main question is what is remove submission meant to do and, if the submission is removed, why does the status of the submission not change?
