Hi

If I interpret your post correctly, your Moodle sends a password reset mail, which is accepted by the next hop relayin.nic.in but not received by the final recipient. (I assume he checked his spam folder.)

Then it is a business between the relayin.nic.in and the next hop, the MX of the recipient. The system administrator of relayin.nic.in can dig further, not the sysadmin of Moodle.

One thing odd:
$ host 164.100.14.95
95.14.100.164.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer relayin.nic.in.
95.14.100.164.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer relay.nic.in.

The IP address has two canonical names.

$ host relayin.nic.in
Host relayin.nic.in not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

$ host relay.nic.in
relay.nic.in has address 164.100.14.95

Only one has an A record back to the IP.

Also some MX don't like noreply@. You need the error message the recipient's MX generated to be sure.

P.S. Why is this password reset "very urgent"? Is the owner a VIP?
wink

BTW, do password resets by others arrive?

OK. So what happens to the mails accepted by the relay server can be only traced by the administrator of that relay server. Contact the person who gave you the login name and its password to the relay server.

In addition to what you've already been told, see the moodle site isn't running https but http.  You probably need to run site under a valid certificate.

When it comes to email from a moodle, moodle only packages whatever up into a valid email format and attempts to send.   Once it does that, Moodle is done with it - moodle code is actually like a client.

Message is now at the mercy of DNS, mail servers at the other ends of the destination ... relay + mail system where message is sent.

Due to the nature of email these days, mail servers (relay in your case) not only have to have valid MX records, but for spam checking, a SPF record, a DKIM record, etc.

For each thing a message lacks, spam filters will penalize the message and if it reaches a certain level of penalized points (as determined by the spam checker), message is tagged as spam or even dropped on the floor with no return mail to postmaster address saying why it was blocked/dropped/etc.

Since your server is Linux, suggest installing postfix and running it as local only (sending only).  Your phpmailer will send to your postfix first where one can see what's going on and with postfix configured to relay mail to your SMTP relay host, it will also get informative bounced messages.  Easier to figure out what the issue might be.

Plus ... one can install alpine ... a text based MTA ... and use it to send messages directly from the server's Postfix thus helping determine if the issue is with Moodle or not.

Good luck!

Well, we see there is a guest OS (RedHat Enterprise icon) in VMWare and the mail.log file for the guest OS RHEL.  I also see a tab for resolv.conf ... that's what one should be looking at for DNS servers that guest OS is set to use.

The mail log says 'host not found ... for gmail.com ... sooooooo ...

Lines in /etc/resolv.conf should say:

nameserver [thenaDNSserverIP]

Add two name servers to the top of the list ... Googles own DNS resolvers:

nameserver 8.8.8.8

nameserver 8.8.4.4

Then using ssh in that guest OS, do a dig for google.com:

dig gmail.com

You should see an 'ANSWER SECTION' to dig output that shows the IP address your server is getting for gmail.com.

Your screen shot shows messages have been deferred and are in the mailque ... so issue 'mailq' to see how many and get minor details about the messages.

If you are running Postfix, one can also issue a postfix command to flush the que for messages waiting for DNS resolution to be sent:

postfix flush

Then check your mail log again.

IF, for some reason, your network/VMWare etc won't let you use 8.8.'s try  the open resolvers as DNS additions to /etc/resolv.conf:

nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

Add them to the top of the DNS servers you might already have in resolv.conf.

Also, Guest OS's need to know who they are ... so what's in your /etc/hosts file?

For mail to work, DNS must work!

What version of Moodle?

Your server:

Server: Apache/2.4.27 (Red Hat) PHP/5.6.25
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.6.25

You have a bigger problems ...

I see the dig version appears to report el6 - which is enterprise release 6.
IF that's commercial RH, are your entitlements to get updates still valid?
https://access.redhat.com/discussions/4768501

el6 reached end of life Nov 2020 - tis now Dec.  Unless you get the extended support, I'd strongly advise not trying to run this moodle on anything but a restricted private IP network.

Also .. I asked for a look see @ resolv.conf ... what DNS servers were there originally?  There should be at least one line that points to an internal DNS server on your 10. network.   If you added the DNS resolvers I suggested to the top of the servers listed, and the dig failed with 'no servers can be reached', your network might have been configured to allow port 53 (dns port) to be only at/from a specific 10. IP address.   Can't help with that ... you will have to talk to your network folks and the person(s) who admin your internal DNS server(s).

Networking comes before application ... moodle is nothing more than an application and is 'trumped' (no pun intended) by network config.

Best of luck!
