I'm guessing your trainer is 'editing teacher'. If it was 'non-editing teacher', (and assuming it's set to separate groups rather than visible groups) your 'accessallgroups' would have worked.
If it's feasible to change their role to non-editing teacher, then that might be the simplest course of action.
Failing that, I would try going in to the permissions of a certificate and switch off permissions for the trainer to edit the settings of the certificate - really to do anything above the level of a student. I don't know if that will work, but might be worth a try.
